Fuel Economy Labels

To help us make smarter choices, all new cars and late model used cars sold in New Zealand must now display Vehicle Fuel Economy Labels.

These labels tell you how much fuel a car uses and how much it costs to run. These labels apply to any vehicle sold by a motor vehicle trader or any person selling a vehicle on internet trading websites such as TradeMe, provided the information is available.

The label includes:

  • A star rating to show the fuel efficiency of the vehicle, from half a star for a poor performer to 6 stars for the most efficient cars
  • An indicative cost of running the car for a year, so you can easily make comparisons with other makes and models
  • The car’s fuel economy, which tells you how much fuel it uses per 100 kilometres.
