KiwiRail is hoping to have electric railcars up and running in Auckland by 2013 and is on the lookout for suppliers.

The state-owned corporation has confirmed it is in the market for 114 self-propelled railcars that will travel speeds of up to 110 km/h and are capable of handling the steep grade of a 3km central Auckland tunnel.

The estimated cost of the railcars is $500m and the fleet would be capable of carrying about 9000 passengers.
