Wellington homeowners can get home insulation now and pay for it on council rates bills. But act now - to get your insulation installed you should apply quickly.
You can get home insulation and pay for it on your rates bill over 9 years as part of the Greater Wellington Regional Council's "Warm Greater Wellington" programme (conditions apply, read more below).
The aim of the programme is to make Wellington homes warmer and healthier by offering an easy finance option for the installation of home insulation.
Smart Energy Solutions is an approved provider in the programme and can give you all the information on adding insulation to your rates and we'll can also help you with the paperwork. But act now - to get your insulation installed this winter!
Beyond insulation Smart Energy Solutions also supplies heat pumps, ventilation systems, LED downlights, hot water management systems and more to help you lower your energy bills. While these products are outside the Wellington Regional Council's funding scheme - we have other finance options available to assist if needed.
Insulation keeps your home warmer and drier and can lower your power bills. Underfloor insulation can reduce draughts from Wellington's notorious winds and, along with ceiling insulation creates a barrier to reduce heat escaping your home during winter - this can lower your energy bills. Even more importantly a study by the Wellington School of Medicine & Health Sciences* confirmed that people who live in insulated homes are healthier. Damp cold houses are significant contributors to respiratory illness.
How Much Funding is Available?
The Greater Wellington Regional Council's (GWRC) programme provides up to $3,900 of funding support for home insulation products which can be used for ceiling or underfloor insulation installed by an approved provider in homes built before the year 2000. The interest rate is 7% per annum and is reviewed annually so Insulation of $3,900 would have an approximate repayment of $12 per week.
For eligible Masterton and Wainuiomata ratepayers there is also funding for heat pumps and we're an approved provider for both insulation and heatpumps. Masterton & Wainuiomata ratespayers read more.
Who is Eligible for this Insulation Funding?
To be eligible for the GWRC funding you must:
- Be a GWRC ratepayer
- Be up to date with payments on your rates
- Own a home in Wellington that was built before 2000
- Have quotes from an approved insulation provider (that's us)
How is the funding re-paid?
The funding is repaid through your regular GWRC rates bill and is itemised as a "targeted rate". The repayments are over a period of 9 years and you can make additional repayments if you wish to pay it off earlier.
If you sell your house before fully paying off the financial assistance you are legally required to disclose the existence of the targeted rate to potential buyers. Alternatively you can pay the outstanding amount off in full prior to selling.
Adding insulation will mean you use less energy (electricity, wood, gas) to create the equivalent warmth and so you can save money while you're paying the insulation off.
